Embroidering Napped Fabrics |
|
Napped fabrics such as terry, crushed
velvet, velour and corduroy can be successfully embroidered. Select a
design that has adequate underlayment -- those stitches under the fill
area that help stabilize the design and provide better coverage. If you
examine the design in your embroidery software, you should see
underlayment stitches running at an angle that is different from the
fill stitches.
Test-stitch the design on a scrap of napped fabric. If the nap shows through the stitches, you will need to use a topping. If the finished item will never be washed, you can use water-soluble stabilizer as a topping to keep the nap from showing through the stitches. (Some use water-soluble on washable items, but after a few washings, the nap will start to poke through the stitches.) Place the topping over the design area, pin the edges, then embroider. After embroidering, tear away any excess stabilizer. For items that will be washed, a more permanent topping is required. Tulle (very fine netting) is an excellent topping. Use a color that matches the background fabric. After embroidering, tear away the excess. Any remaining bits if tulle will disappear into the nap. Another option is Dry CoverUp from HoopItAll. This product comes in a variety of colors to match your embroidery thread and it tears away cleanly after embroidering. Perhaps the simplest option is to use an appliqué design -- no topping needed! Place a layer of water-soluble stabilizer under the appliqué fabric to make it easier to trim, then tear away the excess stabilizer. Next issue: credit cards online |
