From the Readers

Donna wrote (regarding sewing rooms): You did a note on sewing rooms and I know we all would like more on this. I just redid mine and I used closet maid cabinets because they were reasonable and they had drawer units with tops that I could put my threads in. I put my wooden racks laid down in the small drawers and even had room beside them to stand some of the other types of spools. The deeper drawer on the bottom holds the plastic thread shed type boxes standing up. I had to have my husband cut the handle off but that was my choice to get more in the drawer standing. I could have laid them down easily.

I am sure your readers will write in with their best storage ideas and we would all love to gain by them. We all have different ways to store hoops, stabilizers, feet, books, etc. I just reorganized yet I am always looking for a better way to do things.

The following comments are about favorite tools.

Greta wrote: My dad was a dentist and I have a few of his old tools that are great for keeping fabric and tulle from getting caught by the needle and then twisted back up thru the embroidery foot. My favorite is called a double ended dental pick. It can be found here( http://www.widgetsupply.com/page/WS/CTGY/dental-other-pick ). The ones I have are like the 3rd down on the page. I also use it to loosen and remove basting stitches, it slides under the stitch much easier than anything I have tried to use before, even tiny scissors. I also love the hemostats, they are great for removing thread from tiny areas, and for tying knots on short lengths of thread. Surgical knots are easy to tie with just a little practice, and they are very strong.

Deb wrote: I just love my small dental pick for holding up those small jump stitches between letters, eyes, and such. It is easy to slip under the jump stitch then you can clip the thread with your pointy scissors without worrying about cutting one of the other threads.

Dottie wrote: I wouldn't be without an Uninterruptible Power Supply, better known as UPS or battery backup. I plug my machine into the surge/battery plug in and if the power goes out while I'm embroidering, it allows me to make a note what stitch I'm on, etc. so that I can start where the design was when the power went out.

Sonia wrote: My favourite tool is a pair of long nose pliers. Instead of tweezers, I use pliers. The jaws are smooth and narrow with sharp points, small enough that I can unpick stitches. It is very much like the pliers one uses for beading, but the jaws are smaller, as they are specifically designed for electronics.
