Misbehaving Thread

Thread runs a treacherous course from spool to needle. Any rough edge it passes over will eventually cause the thread to shred, especially considering the high speed used in embroidery. Check the thread stand first for any roughness in the guide loop, or for anything that might interfere with the thread unspooling smoothly.

Some threads seem to be positively possessed by demons, and will unwind with twists and kinks that eventually turn into knots. As the knot gets hung up, then suddenly passes through the tension disks, it will cause the thread to loop. Your fill area will have a lumpy, unattractive appearance. This can also cause the thread to shred, as it strains to perform. Watch the thread as you stitch. Try turning the spool upside down (it sometimes helps). If the thread will not behave, you may have to guide it from thread stand to machine using your hands. Certain dark or bold colors may be more prone to such problems, possibly from the extra dye weakening the thread.

Using a needle that is too small for the thread can also cause shredding, as the friction builds from passing through a too-small eye. 40 weight rayon or embroidery thread needs a size 80/12 needle. Thicker thread will need an even larger needle. Metallic threads also perform better with a larger eye.

Another common culprit is lint in the thread path. More on that tomorrow.

If shredding thread is an issue, no matter what color thread you are using, ask the repairman to check the thread path for problems.
