Traveling with Your Machine

If you decide to take your machine with you when you travel, treat it well. If you are simply driving to take a class at the local dealer, before putting the machine in your car, move the presser foot and needle into the down position. If your machine came with a cover or case, use it. Place the machine in the footwell behind the driver's seat. Pack a towel around the machine to hold it in place. If you must place the machine in your trunk, put it inside a sturdy box, pad it with towels or a blanket, then place heavy items around the box to keep it from moving.

If your machine is too heavy to carry, a wheeled suitcase may work well. Add extra padding around the machine (towels, blanket, layers of foam rubber). A large suitcase may have room for all your extra supplies. You can even buy a suitcase made just for this purpose, but you will pay more.

If you are flying, or you want to ship your machine, use the original packing box. If you do not have the box, ask you dealer if she can give you one that will fit your machine. Use all the packing materials. Any loose items should be wrapped separately, then tape packing material to packing material so nothing moves. If flying, ask if the box can be a carry-on instead of intrusting it to baggage handlers. If shipping, buy insurance. Pack the original shipping box inside an unmarked box to disguise the contents and to provide an extra layer of protection.
