Adapting a Design

You have the perfect design, but feel it would be even "more perfect" if you made a small change. Check the copyright to be sure that modifications are not expressly forbidden (this is rare). If you have the "all clear", then think about changing thread colors, deleting part of the design, or combining the design with lettering or with another design.

Thread color choices will depend upon what threads you have on hand, what colors will work best with the fabric (you want sufficient contrast), wanting holiday or team colors, or simply personal preferences. If you can change the colors in your embroidery software, you will be able to do a virtual test-stitch to see how the colors work together and to be sure you have made the substitutions correctly.

Sometimes you will want to stitch only part of the design. If you cannot delete stitches in your embroidery software, just skip past the unwanted section when you stitch the design. Your machine may let you advance to the next color with a single click, or you may need to advance through the design one stitch at a time.

If you want to add lettering or combine two designs, it is easiest to do so in your embroidery software. Be sure to save the new design with a new name or you will over-write the original design. You may also be able to combine designs at your machine, but the larger screen of your computer will allow you to be more precise.
