Centering a Design

You want to embroider a design on the front of a t-shirt, sweatshirt or towel. You carefully center the design. But once it is stitched, it doesn't look centered. What went wrong?

Be sure that the design is centered within the embroidery field by checking it in your software. Most embroidery software will allow you to easily center a design. Now take a good look at the design. Is it symmetrical? If so, then centering is easy. The center of the design belongs in the center of the sweatshirt, t-shirt or towel.

If the design is asymmetrical, decide if the visual center is the same as the measured center. Huh? Let's say you have a 4-inch wide design of a cat, with the long tail stretching off to the left. The measured center is 2" from either side, but the visual center will be the cat's body (not counting the tail). The visual center might be 2-1/2" from the left side (vertical line in the image shown here). That is the point to center on your sweatshirt.

Not sure where the visual center is? Print a template at actual size. Trim the paper to the size of your hoop. Pin it to your garment and look. Once you find the placement that "looks right", hoop the sweatshirt around the paper template. Remove the paper and embroider the design.
